Government:
- Type of Government: Iceland has a unitary government, and it is a constitutional republic- which is a state in which the head of state and other officials are representatives of the people. They must govern to existing constitution.
- Leaders: The President is head of state and severs for four years. However, there is no term limit. The Prime Minister is the leader of the majority party and is the leader of the government.
- Branches: 4 branches of government- executive, legislative, and judicial. The executive branch consists of the President and the Prime Minister. Legislative branch (Althingi): One of the world’s oldest parliaments, 63 seats shared by 6 different political parties, and members serve 4 term by proportional representation. Judicial branch- Compromised of the supreme court, district courts, and various special courts, it is independent from the executive and legislative branches.
- Regional Government: Iceland's administrative districts are divided into 8 regions named Austurland, Hofudhborgarsvaedhi, Nordhurland Eystra, Nordhurland Vestra, Sudhurland, Sudhurnes, Vestfirdhir, and Vesturland
- How Power is Shared: The leader of the state is the President and executive power is exercised by the government. Iceland has a parliamentary democracy that was established in 930 making it the world’s oldest. The Parliament and the president share the legislative power, and the judiciary is independent of the other two branches. Every 4 years the electorate chooses 63 representatives to be a part of parliament. After this the president gives a leader of a political party the authority to form a cabinet.
